In this presentation, Patrick will talk about creating characters whose race, culture, gender and/or sexual orientation differ from his own. Patrick addresses the process of designing a character, determining their motivations and mannerisms, and seeing the world through their eyes. He discusses his use of “sensitivity readers” to avoid stereotypical thinking, and how to recognize and avoid cultural appropriation.
