Thursday, January 20, 2011: Documentary Screening at UVic

Here's an upcoming event that is sure to be of interest:

Library of the Early Mind: A grown-up look at children’s literature
A documentary film by Edward J. Delaney and Steven Withrow

The film is presented by the Faculty of Education in celebration of opening of the Centre for Outreach Education (CORE).

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Sylvia Pantaleo, an assistant professor in the faculty whose research focuses on children’s literature in elementary and middle school classrooms. Panel discussants include Valery Wyatt, writer and editor; Kristi Bridgeman, illustrator; Tracey Kendrick, head of Youth Services for Victoria Public Library; and Sheryl McFarlane, writer. The event is free and open to the public; seating will be first come, first seated.

This new documentary by filmmakers Edward J. Delaney and Steven Withrow is an exploration of the art and impact of children’s literature on our kids, our culture, and ourselves.

From the first stories we hear told to us to those childhood heroes that stay with us a lifetime, the impact on our culture runs deeper than what we might expect. The film features nearly 40 prominent authors and illustrators talking about their work, its genesis and its impact. The number of books in print by the authors in the film exceeds 240 million.

The intended audience is ages 13 and up.
