Our last meeting of the season will take place on Monday, May 17, 2010, 7:30 pm at the Nellie McClung Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library, (Cedar Hill & McKenzie).

Doors Open at 7:00 pm, come and browse the Cadboro Bay Books table. 

Everyone welcome! Cost: $5.00 at the door, Students $4.00, $25.00/year. Monthly meetings will resume in September.


Our presenter for May is Carolyn Hart.

Carolyn Hart is a mother of two boys, a teacher, a children’s book reviewer and the B.C. Regional Officer for the Canadian Children’s Book Centre. She makes presentations about early literacy and outstanding children’s books to parent groups and professional organizations throughout British Columbia.

Carolyn will speak on Cultural Diversity in Children’s Picture Books.

This workshop will introduce numerous new picture books that celebrate our cultural diversity. As well, we will look at activities and games that match the themes of the featured books. When we make wise choices with the books we read to children, we can help diminish stereotyping and help youngsters develop respect for human diversity and curiosity about our world.

No Roundtable Meeting In March

The Victoria Childrens' Literature Roundtable will be joining the children of Victoria in their extended Spring Break this year, but we will return on April 26th, 2010 with another stellar presenter: Jeremy Tankard.

Jeremy Tankard is the author and illustrator of several books, including the best-selling, and the critically acclaimed, Grumpy Bird (Scholastic Press, 2007). Grumpy Bird has been nominated for many awards including the Blue Spruce Award 2008, The Shining Willow Award 2008, and the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Children’s Book Award 2008—a truly outstanding achievement for a first book. His most recent book, Boo Hoo Bird (Scholastic Press, 2009), received a starred review in Quill and Quire in January 2009.

Jeremy’s illustrations have appeared in many major magazines and newspapers including Time, Fortune, the New York Times, the Globe and Mail and the Boston Globe. He has been recognized by American Illustration magazine, the Society of Illustrators in New York City, and the American Association of Educational Publishers. His work has been exhibited in New York, Toronto and Calgary.

February's meeting features Sarah Harvey. Harvey caught the bookselling bug at fifteen when she got a part-time job at Ivy's Bookshop. She went back to university in her thirties, when her children were three and ten. After graduating with a degree in English she worked as the trade book buyer at the University of Victoria Bookstore for fifteen years. She currently works as a children's book editor.

She started writing reviews for the Globe and Mail in 1988 and had book columns in both the Times Colonist and Monday Magazine. In 1999, she became friends with author Carol Shields who invited her to submit an essay, entitled "Mother, Interrupted," to Dropped Threads 2, published in 2001.  Carol also suggested that she consider writing children's books; now Sarah is the author of four books for children:  Puppies on Board, The West is Calling, Bull’s Eye, and The Lit Report.
