She went back to university in her thirties, when her children were three and ten. After graduating with a degree in English she worked as the trade book buyer at the University of Victoria Bookstore for fifteen years. She currently works as a children's book editor.
She started writing reviews for the Globe and Mail in 1988 and had book columns in both the Times Colonist and Monday Magazine. In 1999, she became friends with author Carol Shields who invited her to submit an essay, entitled "Mother, Interrupted," to Dropped Threads 2, published in 2001. Carol also suggested that she consider writing children's books; now Sarah is the author of four books for children: Puppies on Board, The West is Calling, Bull’s Eye, and The Lit Report.
